- : Of course the A4000 is a wee bit expensive. On the other hand the 586 you
- : mention doesn't impress me at all. With 8MB you can't do much beyond
- : booting those bloated PC OSs. The monitor is probably a cheap crap 14".
-
- I have to agree with you on this, but still the Amiga in question here is delivered
- only with 6MB RAM, which is heardly enough to do much on AmigaDOS either.
- Yes, the monitor is probably crap!!
-
- : HD and CD are probably the cheapest crap IDE drives instead of expandable SCSI.
-
- Both is Enhanced IDE, but still pretty fast. (That is 5 speed CD-drive.)
- The HD is at least as fast as my own Seagate...(i.e. 2MB/s)
- The HD also has a 3 year warrenty! (while the machine has a 1 year warrenty)
-
- EIDE is also expandable to 4 units!
- How many units are you using on your SCSI-bus??
- If you use more than 3 units on the SCSI-bus you will notice a decreasing
- preformance due to the bandwidth of the SCSI-bus. (Of course newer SCSI-buses have
- better bandwidth preformance.)
-
- On the other hand, when I bought my A4000, it had an 80MB HD, which took some
- 10 seconds to even think about booting... (This is of course no longer a problem
- since I have upgraded to a 430MB Seagate HD)
- But why did CBM sell high-end machines with crap HD's...?
-
- : And don't forget: according to a recent report in a german PC mag even
- : brand name PCs (Compaq et al) have a failure rate of 40% within the first
- : 6 months, ESCOM (!) PCs even 60% ! Mostly monitor or HD. I find this incredible !
-
- Although I have not had much problems myself with either of the Amigas I have had
- (A500/A4000), I have several friends who came to me with their 'non working' Amigas,
- asking me to fix them. (Mostly A500's)
- A friend of mine have had several repairs on his 1942 Monitor, and that after
- CBM went bankrupt, so he had to pay these repairs himself...
-
- Since you can not provide comparable figures for Amiga's, I belive you have no right
- claiming that Amiga's are more stable just because you yourself have not had
- trouble with your Amiga...
-
- : My A3000 I bought 3 years ago was DM 4000,- ($2700) and I never ever had any
- : trouble with it although I use it nearly daily.
-
- I have never had much trouble with my A4000 either, but I can hardly say that two
- cases of such is accountable for the whole Amiga community...
-
- : It's the most stable computer I've seen in my 15 years computer experience,
- : apart maybe from IBM mainframes.
-
- I am not saying that PC's are great machines, on the countrary I really _hate_
- the PC's architecture, which I belive to be a _bad_ design.
- If not I probably would have bought a PC by now!
-
- My point to this is that Amiga High-end machines are to expensive compared to
- Pentium PC's, which in fact are much more powerful than their Amiga counterparts.
-
- I hope that Escom starts to realize that they can't sell high-end Amigas at the
- current prices if they hope to make it...
